Winter Storm Updates

State of Emergency

Wayne County has declared a local State of Emergency ahead of significant winter weather forecasted for Saturday, with all municipalities in Wayne County joining the declaration by request and consent of their mayors. This declaration does NOT include any restrictions. It simply allows the County to request emergency assets from the state, coordinate more effectively with local partners, and qualify for emergency funding reimbursement.

Roads and Travel

NCDOT and Public Works have salted and brined major routes and secondary streets throughout the city. The City of Goldsboro Public Works Department will monitor snow accumulation and may initiate plowing operations as conditions warrant. Timing will be adjusted based on snowfall amounts and the rate of accumulation, with final determinations made by Public Works. Please be mindful and avoid parking vehicles on roadways, especially along major thoroughfares, to allow crews to operate safely and efficiently if plowing becomes necessary.

**IMPORTANT**
If you must drive—and we strongly suggest you don’t unless necessary—please take the time to clear all snow and ice from your vehicle, including the roof, hood, windows, lights, and mirrors. Snow or ice that comes loose from a moving vehicle can become a dangerous projectile, putting other drivers, pedestrians, and first responders at risk. This simple step improves visibility and helps keep everyone on the road safe.

NCDOT Towing Policy
The North Carolina Department of Transportation is shifting to de-icing operations, and the immediate tow policy is now in effect. Under the policy, NCDOT and the N.C. State Highway Patrol are authorized to remove abandoned vehicles from roadways and shoulders to keep roads clear for maintenance crews and safe for drivers.

Vehicles left on the road during adverse weather can be towed to prevent accidents or damage from snow, ice, or passing traffic. Vehicles that are off the roadway and do not pose safety hazards will not be immediately towed.

Cold Weather Pet Care

With colder weather moving into our area, the Goldsboro Police Department urges residents to take steps to stay safe and prepared. Please keep pets in mind during cold conditions. Pet owners are encouraged to provide adequate food and clean, unfrozen water. Also, bring pets inside whenever possible. Cold temperatures affect animals just as they do people. Caring for our animals is part of caring for our community.
