Annual Free Chlorine Conversion Ends June 18
Next Wednesday, June 18, 2025, the City of Goldsboro’s Water Treatment Plant’s annual free chlorine burnout period will end. Staff at the treatment plant will resume feeding ammonia into the water system in order to begin operating with chloramines as the disinfectant again.
To promote optimal disinfection throughout the water distribution system, the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality recommends public water systems using chloramine disinfection switch to chlorine-only disinfection for a minimum of three consecutive weeks every year.
This change is a routine practice in water treatment and will not affect the quality of drinking water. Chloramines should be removed from water prior to use in kidney dialysis machines and in tropical fish tanks.
