Water Treatment Plant Converting Back to Chloramines as Disinfection Method

The City of Goldsboro will end its annual free chlorine burnout period Thursday, June 20. We will resume adding ammonia to the water and continue to operate with chloramines as the disinfectant.

To promote optimal disinfection throughout the water distribution system, the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality recommends public water systems using chloramine disinfection switch to chlorine-only disinfection for a minimum of three consecutive weeks every year.

This change is a routine practice in water treatment and will not affect the quality of drinking water. Chloramines should be removed from water prior to use in kidney dialysis machines and in tropical fish tanks.
